ALPHA circulators now have an EPD declaration

The ALPHA range of high-efficiency variable speed circulators has received an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), an objective measure of their environmental impact that makes it easier to assess overall building sustainability.

The ALPHA1 and ALPHA2 models have already received the internationally recognised EPDs from the Institut Bauen und Umwelt e. V. (IBU), in accordance with the EN15804 and ISO 14025 standard. ALPHA3 and other models are currently in the data validation phase with declarations imminent. The EPDs specify quantitative, objective and third-party verified information about the entire life cycle of the ALPHA pumps, from raw material extraction to end-of-life. As such, they provide essential, verifiable data for assessing building sustainability in such certification systems as DGNBBNBBREEAM, and LEED.

Make informed decisions on environmental impact

Chris Skeen, Head of Small Circulators, Grundfos Domestic Building Services, says that customers are increasingly demanding documentation of how a given product impacts the environment.

“A pump’s environmental impact is increasingly assessed on an equal footing with criteria such as functionality and price. The EPD describes the environmental footprint left by the ALPHA pumps throughout their life cycle, and is very helpful to our customers because its verified information enables them to make informed, sustainability-related decisions on their projects. EPDs also ensure we at Grundfos continue developing solutions at the cutting edge of meeting, and preferably exceeding, future environmental requirements.”

How much do inefficient circulator pumps cost your customers?

Running old circulator pumps can be inefficient and costly. The good news is a smart replacement circulator like ALPHA can save up to 75% energy consumption per year over an old pump, without compromising comfort.

For example, AUTOADAPT technology in ALPHA2 and ALPHA3 models automatically finds the best pump setting for the actual energy needed, to maximise comfort and minimise energy consumption.

When you compare today’s pumps with the pumps of the past, we’re using about one-fifth as much energy as 10–15-year-old pumps did.

Sustainability at Grundfos

Sustainability and a deep-rooted respect for people and planet has always been at the core of our business. It is an integral part of our 2025 business strategy, which is accelerating our energy-efficient water and digital solutions so we can make the most impact on some of the world’s most critical challenges.

We’re proud to be the world’s first water solutions company with net-zero targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. Four ambitions guide our sustainability future:

  • Saving energy – through smarter and more efficient pump technology.
  • Saving water – through reducing our water withdrawal across operational sites and the development of water efficient and water reuse solutions.
  • Circular business – embedding circular principles throughout our business.
  • Water access – providing water to people in need.

These are the areas where we want to lead and where we can have the greatest impact. They directly connect with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and Goal 13 (Climate Action) are where we can contribute the most, by protecting the world’s water, alleviating climate challenges, protecting precious resources, and improving people’s quality of life.
