Want to save energy and costs in your industrial water treatment systems?

Hard energy fact: Many pumps in industrial water treatment systems are set to run at full speed constantly. But most of the time this isn’t necessary and it can lead to massive energy waste.

Intelligent answer: Grundfos iSOLUTIONS and e-pumps that intelligently and automatically adjust to fluctuating flow and demand. That way you can improve accuracy and reliability, minimise downtime, and ensure constant pressure, even flow and safe operations.

With the right energy-efficient e-pumps and Grundfos iSOLUTIONS, you could potentially reduce energy use by up to 70%10 in industrial water treatment systems.

Intelligent solutions that can handle all water treatment requirements

Constant changes in water quality, flux rates and fouling make it challenging to control pump pressure and keep energy use in check in many industrial water treatment applications. At the same time, different industries all have strict requirements when it comes to water sources, including surface water, groundwater, seawater, tap water or even wastewater.

Water treatment systems need to be flexible enough to deal with changing water quality – and always ensure that water leaving the system is safe, compliant, and of the right quality. At the same time, increasing water scarcity means that industries need to become more efficient and sustainable with their water use.

Intelligent pump solutions from Grundfos automatically monitor operations and optimize systems in real time. This ensures controlled, accurate, reliable, energy-efficient industrial water treatment processes – whether treating aggressive media like seawater, producing ultrapure water, working with substance removal, disinfection or desalination, or any other water treatment process.

Explore our benefits for industrial water treatment

Our intelligent solutions and e-pumps help optimize industrial water treatment. From easy maintenance to automatic adjustments and remote monitoring, here’s a glimpse of what to expect.

Easy maintenance

Detect issues early, get notified about lack of upkeep and reduce resources spent on maintenance.

Adjusts to demand

Variable frequency-controlled pumps with IE5 motors automatically adjust speed according to demand.

Remote monitoring

Monitor pump flow, speed, power consumption, time run and more through the Grundfos GO app.

Helping Industrial Water Equipment Ltd. save 70% energy per m3 water produced

If Industrial Water Equipment Ltd.’s (IWE) reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment systems stop working, it can be catastrophic for their customers. A brewery, for example, can lose an entire batch of beer if the water is not of the correct purity.

For many years, IWE’s RO systems relied on human input. A customer might notice a tank not filling, that they were running low on water or that conductivity was increasing. But if no one noticed production could stop, resulting in costly downtime.

Another issue was the old setup used a fixed-speed pump which meant it ran at a constant speed all the time, using more energy than necessary. At the same time, IWE’s customers were also calling for more energy-efficient operations – and wanted to save money in the long term.

IWE worked with Grundfos to secure a new solution, which includes Grundfos iSOLUTIONS. IWE’s RO machines are now controlled via variable-speed pumps powered by IE5 motors. That means the pumps can adjust speed according to demand, which has reduced IWE’s energy use by about 70%.

IWE can also monitor pump flow, speed, consumption and time run with the new setup – and everything can be monitored remotely. In addition, IWE has gone from a 2.2-kilowatt pump with 21 stages to a smaller 500-watt pump with 13 stages. This means less floor space is required to use and operate the solution, reducing complexity.

The customer achieved

Energy consumption reduced by 70%

Reduced footprint, going from 2.2-kilowatt pump to 500-watt pump

Minimized maintenance

The pump solutions we supplied to the customer

Grundfos supplied CRIE multistage, centrifugal pumps controlled via variable-speed pumps – themselves powered by IE5 motors and DDA – alongside a Flow Control Monitoring digital dosing pump. Together, these enable real-time monitoring, remote control, fault prediction and system optimization. Other components such as direct sensors, Grundfos iSOLUTIONS Monitor, and Grundfos Remote Monitoring were included as part of Grundfos iSOLUTIONS. The solution offers a smaller footprint for the RO unit, which is an advantage as it requires less floor space to use and operate.
