In this module, you’ll be introduced to the new ALPHA range for hot water recirculation systems and gain a baseline understanding of the pumps, their features, and the application they are used in.
Domestic hot water recirculation systems deliver hot water instantly to homeowners, saving both time and water. The ALPHA range for these systems consists of two models, the ALPHA HWR and the ALPHA COMFORT SYSTEM. Hot water recirculation systems can be separated into two types:
Systems with a dedicated return line.
And systems without.
The ALPHA HWR is designed for hot water recirculation systems with a dedicated return line. It is controlled by temperature via an integrated sensor. The pump is installed on the hot water return line to ensure a minimum temperature is maintained at the furthest tap. The integrated temperature sensor ensures that hot water is available for immediate use throughout the house.
The ALPHA COMFORT SYSTEM is designed for hot water recirculation systems without a dedicated return line. The pump comes with a COMFORT valve which is installed on the furthest fixture from the water heater, connecting the hot water line to the cold-water line. When the water begins to cool and drops below a certain temperature, the COMFORT valve will open to allow hot water to circulate back via the cold water line.
The ALPHA HWR and ALPHA COMFORT SYSTEM are designed with features that help to:
Ease installation, setup and maintenance
Enhance energy efficiency and comfort for homeowners
Provide digital troubleshooting and guided setup via Bluetooth
Let’s take a closer look…
The ALPHA HWR and ALPHA COMFORT SYSTEM come with AUTOADAPT settings that allow them to adapt to the system in which they are installed. For the ALPHA HWR, there’s no need for you to install an external temperature sensor or timer as these features are already integrated into the pump. You don’t have to worry about wiring sensors or spending extra time on difficult installations. Both pumps provide guided setup through the Grundfos GO app, saving you time by helping you choose the right control mode and setting for the system you are working with. This will provide homeowners with optimal operation of their hot water system, delivering both comfort and energy savings.
On the ALPHA HWR, the display and touch user interface allow you to easily identify any issues with your settings, such as if your system is not getting enough flow.
Both the ALPHA HWR and ALPHA COMFORT SYSTEM come with features designed to reduce the number of call backs that you might receive.
Both pumps will operate on their maximum performance curve, providing enough flow to kick on the most common tankless boilers... while at the same time using maximum flow limits to help decrease noise and flow accelerated corrosion which could lead to pinholes.
To avoid unwanted pump breakdowns caused by dry running, the ALPHA HWR and ALPHA COMFORT SYSTEM includes an in-built dry run protection feature. It stops the pump if no water is detected in the system. The pump will then try to restart a number of times, continuously monitoring for water in the system. If no water is detected for a prolonged period, the pump will stop itself in alarm mode.
By connecting your smart device to the ALPHA HWR and ALPHA COMFORT SYSTEM via the Grundfos GO app, you can:
Set a schedule
Troubleshoot and identify issues
Analyse historical trend data
Perform firmware updates
Thanks to the battery backup, you won’t need to reset the built-in Bluetooth timer if there’s ever a power outage.
That covers our basic introduction to the ALPHA HWR and ALPHA COMFORT SYSTEM range.
