Research And Insight
Modbus
Modbus is an open network technology used in building management systems and across a wide range of industries. It is a de facto standard for data communication, which makes it ideal for use on all automation levels.
The Modbus technology is primarily used in process and factory automation but is also found in building management systems (BMS) worldwide, including office buildings, schools, airports, hotels and hospitals and so on.
Stable, simple and well proven
Modbus makes it possible to integrate devices from different manufacturers into a common network system. Modbus is a truly open and interoperable technology, and although it utilises fairly slow transmission speeds compared to other fieldbuses, it is seen as a stable, simple and well proven protocol.
De facto standard
Because of this, Modbus has become a de facto standard, and it is probably the most widespread network protocol in the industrial manufacturing environment. Besides the normal cable connections, Modbus is also often used for wireless (radio-based) data transmissions.
Services
An operator/building manager can remote control the connected devices, including start/stop, change of operation mode, and settings. A variety of services are also offered, such as data transfer, scheduling, trending, alarming etc. And the status messages, alarms, operation hours, energy consumption, etc. from the connected devices allow the building manager continually to optimise operation of the building or plant.
Applications
Modbus is mainly used within the following applications:
- HVAC Heating, Ventilation, Air conditioning)
- Wastewater
- Water supply
- Oil/gas industry
- Transportation
Grundfos products connect with the Modbus open network protocol in process and factory automation and in building management systems (BMS).
