Grundfos backs a winner for Formula Ethara 2018

Grundfos’ sponsorship of a team of 4 young race enthusiasts from JESS (Jumeirah English Speaking School) in Arabian Ranches has helped the youngsters to take the chequered flag in a race-car competition linked to the F1 in Schools program.

The four 10-11-year-olds were selected to represent their school in the annual Formula Ethera challenge, a competition which required them to work together to develop their own business to design and build a model race car, which they would then have a chance to race in a UAE National Finals race day at Dubai’s Yas Marina Grand Prix circuit.

To support their entry, the youngsters were expected to create a unique ‘brand’ for their team, with their own team uniforms and pit overalls, merchandise to sell and an attractive pit display for race day that would help them stand out ahead of the competition.  After launching their bid under the name ‘Team Bolt’, the JESS youngsters decided to go one better – with their own website and marketing campaign.

Their call for sponsorship to provide the financial help and marketing expertise required to meet the complex challenge was immediately answered by Grundfos, who provided the youngsters with help and advice in planning, marketing and communications, design and much more.

The youngsters’ planning and hard work was rewarded when their miniature gas- owered balsa wood Formula 1 car, was shortlisted from 32 entries by primary school teams from across the UAE to race in the UAE National finals at the Yas Marina circuit on 12 May, where it beat all comers to gain Team Bolt the title of National Formula Ethera Champions for 2018.

They were delighted with the help they received from Grundfos and thankful for the once-in-a-lifetime experience which will leave a lasting memory. “It was an amazing opportunity”, said team member Lauren, “I felt proud and honoured to represent JESS. I now understand teamwork better – lots of different ideas are better than just having your own.”

As well as the fun side, this was a serious challenge that called for the youngsters to think seriously about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacturing, branding, graphics, sponsorship and marketing – all of which would be invaluable skills for them as they progressed with their education. “In addition, it taught them key life skills, like team building and leadership”, said Diego Aravena Head of Communications - Grundfos Middles East, “It was a challenge that perfectly encapsulated the Grundfos philosophy of continuous improvement, innovation and sustainability, so we were happy to be able to support Team Bolt from day 1.”
